Goals of the Power Libraries Program
* To identify schools that currently exemplify the traits of a quality school library media program focused on collaboration and student achievement and are willing to act as a mentor to other schools.

*To identify schools that have the vision to provide a quality school library media program but need assistance in providing an active, viable school library media program which focuses on collaboration and student achievement.

*To provide statewide recognition to schools that recognize focused, systemic changes can result when the entire school staff are given time, support, and training to develop and implement a plan which ties the school library media center program with teacher collaboration and student achievement.

*To provide staff development assistance to school library media programs which will assist them in formulating and implementing a change model to promote practices that help improve student achievement.

Mentoring

I am not an experienced mentor; I'm only on my third mentee. From the first two, who were already in libraries, I learned to listen. They had fabulous ideas. The person I'm mentoring now has just started library school. She's worried about how she'll do. My best advice to her is to be true to herself and her school, as my other mentees were. In October's School Library Journal, Joyce Valenza and Doug Johnson say, "Rather than creating a perfect library, we need to reshape our thinking and… Continue

Graphic Novels

Our school is building a collection of Graphic Novels (we are K-6) and I would like some input about what books you have added to your collection that are worthwhile! Thanks!

Sharing Our Expertise

We have had HUGE success with a shared Google doc of "teacher experts" in some field of technology. Teacher now ask each other for help. Ah...building "capacity!" Click HERE to see our version....and PLEASE feel free to "borrow" the template if it is something you think would work for your area. (Thanks to Toni Weller for the original design!)

Creating a List of What's New in Young Adult Literature 2009-2010

I have just begun my quest to create some type of secondary book list and I am interested in hearing about all the wonderful brand new young adult literature that you are having trouble keeping on your shelves, other than the Stephanie Meyer books and other extremely hot books.

If you haven't read The Hunger Games and the sequel Catching Fire, they are great titles for both middle and high school. The Lisa McMann books: Wake and Fade are spectactular for High School. There are so many wonderful… Continue

Developing Power Library Workshops

Jeffco Schools played host to the final of three workshops for our Developing Power Libraries. What a fantastic day of learning and sharing. It is so powerful to see teacher librarians, administrators, and teachers having conversations devoted to improving student achievement through powerful library programs.

Two years ago, Jeffco had just 11 Power Libraries. Today we are 40 strong and growing! As do all districts, we have such a dedicated and talented group of teacher librarians dedicated inf… Continue
